Rare Origin

El Retiro Bernardina

A diamond in the rough. Discovered a few years ago on a newly acquired farm by the Pacas Family (the same family that discovered the Pacas variety in 1949 on another farm), the Bernardina is an interesting story of discovery.

Prior to taking over the farm, the manager noticed during harvest period that a few select coffee plants were different than other coffees grown on the farm (which mainly grew Pacas and Bourbon varieties). These special plants were vibrant and floral.

The previous owners disregarded the claims and mixed the special cherries with the rest of the plantation cherries. Then in 2012 when the Pacas family took over the farm, they tried the coffee and took notice. After attracting the attention of coffee buyers from around the world, samples were sent to Italy for DNA testing. It turned out that the special plants were 70% match to Gesha and varieties from the Agaro region in Ethiopia!

The Pacas family named this newly discovered variety "Bernardina," after Ruperto Bernardina Merche - the farm manager that discovered these special plants.
