Founded in 1918 by Robert Louis Lamastus, Elida Estate has been farmed by the Lamastus family for four generations. Today, the family manages five estates across four distinct microclimates in the Boquete highlands, with roughly half of Elida’s land situated within a protected reserve of virgin cloud forest inside Volcán Barú National Park.
Climbing from 1,670 to 2,200 masl—the highest cultivated ground in the region—the farm thrives under persistent bajareque mist and in volcanic soil rich in native yeasts. Elevation plays a crucial role in shaping character: upper-section night temperatures drop below 10°C, significantly slowing cherry maturation. This extended ripening period allows sugars and complex aromatics to fully develop, giving Geisha its signature floral, tea-like profile.
Rather than managing the land as a uniform farm, the family cultivates a mosaic of distinct, separately processed plots. The contrast between lower-elevation plots like Loma (1,700–1,800 masl) and high-elevation plots like Vuelta (1,900–1,950 masl) highlights how dramatically altitude shapes flavour, even when processing remains identical.
This meticulous, plot-by-plot focus continues to set global benchmarks, as demonstrated by the Lamastus family’s standout performance in the 2026 Best of Panama (BoP):
1st Place – Geisha Washed Category
3rd Place – Geisha Natural Category
Driven by their extreme-elevation microclimates, these competition-winning lots reflect an unwavering commitment to terroir and technique.
ABOUT THE PROCESS:
Vuelta represents a late-season harvest picked on April 28, closing the 2026 season. Processing follows the natural logic of the plot. Situated along the national park boundary at 1,900–1,950 masl, where cold nights stretch maturation further than anywhere else on the estate.
Vuelta is processed as a classic natural. After starting as whole, ripe cherry with only time and air, it finishes in the Lamastus dark room, where blocking UV light protects the delicate aromatics that high-elevation naturals often lose. The resulting cup reveals notes of strawberry, ripe tropical fruit, rose, and jasmine over candied red fruit, balanced by a winey, complex sweetness, a full silky body, and a long, perfumed finish.
