The Franceschi family's name is synonymous with the rich, volcanic soils of the Chiriquí province. For decades, they cultivated the world-renowned Carmen Estate, a farm that became a benchmark for Panamanian specialty coffee. The exceptional quality produced on this land is internationally recognized; in fact, we were fortunate enough to co-win a lot of Carmen Estate's washed Geisha in the prestigious Best of Panama 2018 auction. Recently, the family made the decision to sell Carmen Estate, embarking on a new path to create a more intimate, family-focused farm. This new project allows them to channel generations of expertise into smaller, meticulously cared-for lots, continuing their tradition of working in harmony with the land to produce coffees that are a true expression of their pristine environment.
Carlos Aguilera Franceschi, a third-generation coffee producer, is the driving force behind this new vision. Having guided Carmen Estate to global acclaim, Carlos is now channeling his wealth of knowledge and innovative spirit into Franceschi Coffee, his family's latest endeavor. While honouring the traditions that have long defined his family's success, Carlos is embracing the opportunity to have a more hands-on connection to his coffee. His meticulous attention to detail—from nurturing the unique terroir of their new land to refining processing techniques—is more focused than ever. Carlos's dedication ensures that every bag of Franceschi coffee represents the culmination of a celebrated past and an exciting, quality-driven future.
This particular lot is a classic washed Geisha, a processing method that allows the inherent qualities of the varietal to shine with remarkable clarity. The coffee cherries are first depulped to remove the outer skin and fruit, followed by a fermentation period in clean water to break down the remaining mucilage. This process results in a cup that is exceptionally clean, bright, and elegant. In the cup, you can expect the classic geisha flavour profile: a bouquet of floral notes, often reminiscent of jasmine and orange blossom, complemented by delicate citrus acidity and a tea-like body. It is a coffee that is both complex and approachable, a beautiful representation of the Franceschi family's unwavering dedication to their craft.
